Des Moines gained a key victory in the United States Hockey League playoffs here Wednesday night, but lost all-star defenseman Scott Lauder in the process.

The Buccaneers blasted Dubuque, 11-5, but Lauder reinjured a shoulder while attempting a check in the third period and was taken to Northwest Hospital for treatment.

Lauder, who suffered a shoulder separation about a month ago, will miss tonight's fourth playoff game at Austin, Minn.

"He was in pain but said, 'I'll be ready for tonight,' " said Bucs Coach Ivan Prediger. "He's a tough kid. He wants to play Saturday, but he won't play tonight."

Prediger is hoping all-star defenseman Greg Shively, who suffered eye and facial injuries last month, can make the trip to Austin. Shively has been skating with the team and his vision, which was blurred after the accident, has improved.

Wednesday night's victory gave the Bucs a 2-1 postseason record. The team is tied with frontrunners Austin and St. Paul with four points. However, Austin and St. Paul have no defeats.

Myles Hart, the regular-season USHL scoring leader, scored a hat trick, the third goal coming 14 minutes 7 seconds into the final period. Jeff Ulrich passed up the shot and left Hart with the short-handed goal.

Scott Rupp also bagged a second goal while a teammate was in the penalty box. Hart, Greg LaDouceur and Bill Ries had powerplay goals.

Lauder, Rick Swarbrick, Tom Miller, Daryl Seltenreich and Ulrich also scored for the Bucs.
