Player Biography

Marty joined the Bucs midway through the 2001-02 season in a trade with the Omaha Lancers, and scored 2 goals and 1 assist in 7 games for the Bucs before an injury sidelined him for the rest of the year. Marty is a native of Lansing, Michigan and says his favorite NHL player is Joe Sakic (Colorado), because he is “great in all aspects of his game”.

Kevin Kasel: Tell me about your family life, do you have any brothers or sisters?

Marty Guerin: Two brothers. Nate is 21, he goes to the University of New Hampshire. Will is 15, just started High School.

Kevin: How old where you when you started playing hockey?

Marty: I was about, I'd say about 2-1/2 or three. We played on a pond in New Hampshire. I don't know when I started organized hockey, but that was when I started skating and messing around with pucks and stuff.

Kevin: I noticed on the roster, it says you are from Lansing, Michigan.

Marty: Yeah.

Kevin: How old were you when you moved there?

Marty: It was in '89, so I was six or seven.

Kevin: Why did you start?

Marty: My Dad got us into it when we were really young. My Dad had a friend who played hockey and he wanted to get us into to it too. So we started playing.

Kevin: Have you always been a forward?

Marty: Yes. All my life.

Kevin: Do you have a favorite pro or college team?

Marty: That's a tough call ... I have always been a Bruins fan, Boston Bruins. I like all college teams. I like watching college hockey. But, I say I'm a pretty loyal Bruins fan.

Kevin: What about a favorite player?

Marty: I like Joe Sakic a lot. He's got some good skills. I like Todd Bertuzzi of the Canucks. He's awesome. He's got a good all around game.

Kevin: Do you have a nickname?

Marty: Just Marty. Just call me Marty.

Kevin: Best advice you've ever received (doesn't have to be hockey-related):

Marty: My Dad always tells me that "what you put in, that's what you are going to get back." So whatever you put into, that's what you will get out of it.

Kevin: Tell me about some of your goals for the future.

Marty: I like to play college hockey somewhere. I like to get a scholarship. I am not sure where yet. But whatever happens. If pro hockey were to come along, I definitely take that opportunity. But, I'm not really betting on it.

Kevin: Finish this sentence: The fans would be surprised to know that I...

Marty: Play the guitar.

Kevin: My first job was ...

Marty: Probably mowing lawns in like seventh or eighth grade.

Kevin: What would you consider your dream car?

Marty: Probably a Lamborghini of some sort, Diablo or something.

Kevin: What do you like to do besides hockey?

Marty: I play the guitar a lot. I like to play golf. I love watching movies and hanging out with friends.

Kevin: What can't you imagine living without?

Marty: Probably my family.

Kevin: Do you have a favorite movie?

Marty: Tough call ... I like the movie Snatch a lot. It's pretty awesome.

Kevin: What's your most embarrassing moment?

Marty: I don't know. They put that on the players thing too. I didn't have an answer for that, so I don't know.

Kevin: Finish this sentence. My team mates think I'm...

Marty: Funny.

Kevin: Who is your favorite non-hockey athlete?

Marty: Probably, (Michael) Vick, the Atlanta Falcons, their quarterback. He's awesome.

Kevin: What is your favorite non-hockey sport?

Marty: Probably golf. I enjoy a good game of golf.

Kevin: What is your favorite food?

Marty: Chicken Parmesan probably, I love that. Spaghetti.

Kevin: Who is your favorite band?

Marty: Dashboard Confessional, probably.

Kevin: Who has been the biggest influence on your life?

Marty: Probably my parents, my Mom and Dad. They always have good advise. They brought me up well.

Kevin: What is your favorite TV show/book?

Marty: Favorite would be, Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. Favorite TV show, I don't know, maybe Real World or something.

Kevin: If you started your own NHL franchise, and you could pick any player, who would you start with and why?

Marty: Steve Yzerman. Because he is a good leader. Good captain. Gotta have a good base to have a good team.

Kevin: Who would you have on your hockey "Dream Team"?

Marty: I have Steve Yzerman, Joe Sakic, Sergei Fedorov, on "D" I would have Hatcher and Lidstrom, in goal I would probably have Roy.

Kevin: What are your superstitions?

Marty: I don't have any. I know lots of guys on the team have them. But I don't have any.

Kevin: If you were stranded on a desert island, whom would you want to be stranded with ... Britney Spears, Cameron Diaz, Sarah Michelle Gellar or Tara Reid?

Marty: That's a tough call, I'd probably say probably Tara Reid.

Kevin: What is your favorite restaurant?

Marty: Gazalis. Down the road. That place is awesome.

Kevin: Who would you rather be, Bugs Bunny or Road Runner?

Marty: Road Runner, he's faster.

Kevin: Who would you rather be, Superman or Batman?

Marty: They told me about this one. I'd say, I thought about it for a while, I'd say Batman. A) because he has a sweet car and B) there is Cat Woman.

Kevin: Any advice for younger hockey players?

Marty: Just work hard and have fun.

Kevin: You get the two bonus questions.

Marty: Alright.

Kevin: What are your duties as captain?

Marty: I try to be a good leader. Be kind of an extension of the Coach, off the ice. On the ice I try to lead by example. Let guys know when they are out of line and let them know when they are doing well. Just try to be a good leader all the time.

Kevin: How do they choose a captain?

Marty: Coach picked 'em.
