Player Biography

Thomas joined the Buccaneers in mid-season in a trade with the Tri-City Storm of the USHL. Thomas was one of three Buccaneers to be selected to play in the USHL All-Star game February 4, 2003.

Kevin Kasel: Tell me about your family life, do you have any brothers or sisters?

Thomas Morrow: Yeah, I have a brother, he about 16 years old. He plays for Hills-Murray, and that's the high school that I played for back home. It's a private, Catholic school.

Kevin: How old where you when you started playing hockey?

Thomas: I had to be about three or four. I started playing in my backyard back home, we had a pond out there. When we first moved in there it kinda froze over, we just skated there. And now we have an elaborate setup, like boards and lights and nets and everything. So we can skate out there every winter.

Kevin: Have you always been a defensemen?

Thomas: Yeah. When you are younger, you kinda play both. I played a little bit of goalie, when you are growing up, cause you have to. But pretty much usually always a defensemen.

Kevin: Tell me about the past teams you've played for.

Thomas: Let's see, the last team I played for, obviously was the (Tri-City) Storm (USHL), then got traded to Des Moines. I am happy with that. Before that, I played with Hills-Murray High School. It's a private Catholic school in Minnesota, the only thing special about that is we took second in state my senior year. We had some pretty good team. And before that, I played for Stillwater growing up.

Kevin: If I won the lottery, the first thing I'd do is ...

Thomas: How much would I win? That's what I want to know.

Kevin: I think the starting amount is about 10 million right now.

Thomas: 10 million, go out and get myself a nice car and a nice house. A nice car would be some sort of import, you know a Lamborghini Diablo or Ferrari Testarossa, or something fast.

Kevin: Do you have a favorite pro or college team?

Thomas: Favorite professional team right now, probably the Detroit Red Wings and the (Colorado) Avalanche. When they are playing each other, it is just great games, they are all flow up and down the ice. Those two teams are great to watch when they are playing in stride and things like that.

Kevin: What about a favorite player?

Thomas: Mike Modano, growing up liking him, ever since I was a little kid. I got to meet him when I was probably in sixth grade, when I was 11 or 12. It was just great. Got to spend a day with him. I have liked him ever since.

Kevin: How did that happen?

Thomas: Actually, I have a friend, if you know anything about Stanley Hubbard who owns Hubbard Broadcasting, well anyway, that's my friend's grandfather. It's a pretty big corporation in Minnesota. And his Uncle knows a bunch that play hockey, and knows a bunch of the pro guys. And he had a get-together at his house, a bunch of old hockey guys get-together, and he lives right on the river, St. Croix River. So you can go water-skiing and all that. And Mike Modano came out, and we got to go, we got to meet Mike Modano and hang out with him for the day. It was pretty fun.

Kevin: Do you have a nickname?

Thomas: I don't know, everybody seems to catch on the the phrase "tomorrow". You put my first and last name together. It's not what I would choose, but it sticks and everybody uses it. So it doesn't really bother me, it's kinda funny, I think.

Kevin: Where would you like to go to college?

Thomas: Right now for colleges, somewhere out east, like BU (Boston University) or BC (Boston College) would be nice. And then, or somewhere in the WCHA, like Minnesota or North Dakota. It would be great to play there.

Kevin: Best advice you've ever received (doesn't have to be hockey-related):

Thomas: It is kinda hockey related. My Dad, he always seem to give me the advise of, "you are only has good as your last game. And if you try to play better, then you did the game before, you will always be constant." That always seems to help me out.

Kevin: What is your favorite hockey memory?

Thomas: To this point, taking second in State with Hills-Murray. It was just great with the whole school came. It was a great atmosphere. I don't know if you know anything about the State tournament in Minnesota? But, we packed the Xcel Energy Center for every game, about 19,000 people you play in front of for all three games. It was just great. I will never forget it.

Kevin: My first job was ...

Thomas: Was working for my Dad. Actually, now that I thinking of it my first job is, you know that friend I told you about, one of my best friends back home, I worked for his Grandfather. We use to work, they have a couple of bigger yachts in the St. Croix River. And actually worked on the yachts, we would tie them up when they got to the dock or serve them drinks and foods and things like that. It sounds kinda hard, but it was real easy. It was a great job. On the weekends we always go out and would drive the boats around and make sure they are running right. So basically, a free tour of the lake. We did what we wanted.

Kevin: What would you being doing now if you weren't playing hockey?

Thomas: I'd be going to school. I'd be going to college. Probably somewhere in Minnesota, cause in-state tuition is cheaper. I'd probably go to a University or College.

Kevin: What are your hobbies?

Thomas: I like a lot of things. Fishing, skiing, I like to travel. I like to see new places. Not really go on a trip just to visit, but actually goto places, stay there for a little while, just to get use to it. That why I like this Junior hockey, you get to go to different places and hang out and it's really a lot of fun.

Kevin: In comparison to your hometown what do you like and dislike about Des Moines?

Thomas: Let's see here, I have been here for three weeks, I don't have any dislikes, it's a lot like the Twin Cities, except it's more scaled down. It's kinda nice, just not quite as big, but it's got everything. There is plenty of things to do, so nothing is going to get old. I don't really have any dislikes, except for the facts that the roads, when you go into different cities like Des Moines and West Des Moines, some the road numbers change. That's really confusing, I still haven't quite figured that all out. But other then that, I really don't have any dislikes.

Kevin: What do you like to do besides hockey?

Thomas: Down here, I just like to hang around with the guys. Goto the gym. It is kinda hockey oriented, but just hanging around with buddies, doing whatever to kill some time. Obviously chasing girls, things like that, you know it's all fun.

Kevin: Do you have a favorite movie?

Thomas: Probably, Shawshank Redemption.

Kevin: What's your most embarrassing moment?

Thomas: Probably, when I went to senior men's hockey with my Dad one time, we were shooting around for warm-ups, and I took a shot and it got away from me. I hit the goalie right in the face. And he chased me around the rink, I had to leave cause he was so mad at me. I couldn't skate that night. I sat in the bleacher to watch them play, he was so mad. They wouldn't let me get on the ice, he was going to attack me. So he just starred at me in the bleachers all night long.

Kevin: What is your favorite non-hockey sport?

Thomas: Probably, golf. I really like to play golf in the summer. I get out about three times a year, so you can image how good I am.

Kevin: If you could have lunch with one person, past or present, who would it be?

Thomas: Anna Kournikova. That would be a lot of fun right now.

Kevin: When you're not playing hockey, where are we most likely to find you (in season or off season)?

Thomas: Off-season, you are most likely to find me hanging around with my friends or at the weight room. Yeah, those two places. And to tell you the truth, even though we're not playing hockey, you would probably find me at the rink. Any way you look at it, I like being around the game.

Kevin: Do you have a specific pre-game meal? If so, what is it?

Thomas: I really don't have a specific pre-game meal. Which is kinda, I don't know if it is bad or anything, usually if we go on bus trips or something, I guess down here I am starting to kinda eat Fazoli's, but most of the time, it is what I can find and grab and never really makes that much difference to me. What matters to me is what I eat the night before. I tried to eat some steak and pasta the night before, something like that, something good in your system.

Kevin: Who has been the biggest influence on your life?

Thomas: Probably my Dad, or my parents in general. They always looked out for me, and I think they way I came up, they took care of me. But they didn't baby me or anything like that. They have been really good parents to me, just take care of me, it's been an easy transition to move out of the house. Just because they way they brought me up, to take care of myself.

Kevin: If you started your own NHL franchise, and you could pick any player, who would you start with and why?

Thomas: I'd pick Patrick Roy. Because you need to start with a strong goaltender. I'm not a goaltender or anything like that, maybe that surprises you, but you gotta kinda go from the net out. That's always been my philosophy. Then from there I try picking a mobile defensemen and high scoring forwards and things like that. But I definitely try and start with Patrick Roy, just because he is a proven, solid goaltender.

Kevin: Who would you have on your hockey "Dream Team"?

Thomas: Put Modano in the middle and Gretzky and Lemieux on the wings, Bobby Orr on defense, Rob Blake and Patrick Roy in the net.

Kevin: If you were stranded on a desert island, whom would you want to be stranded with … Britney Spears, Cameron Diaz, Sarah Michelle Gellar or Tara Reid?

Thomas: I have to pick just one, or can I take them all? I take them all, why pick.

Kevin: What is your favorite restaurant?

Thomas: There is a little place in North Hudson, back home, called Mama Maria's, it's Italian. It's a one-of-a-kind place. Great Italian food. I have to talk my parents into going there, it is kinda expensive.

Kevin: Who would you rather be, Bugs Bunny or Road Runner?

Thomas: Probably Road Runner, he's got the speed.

Kevin: Who would you rather be, Superman or Batman?

Thomas: Batman. Just because he doesn't have any super powers. It's all natural.

Kevin: Any advice for younger hockey players?

Thomas: Work hard. And go out and have fun. That is the biggest thing, just remember it is a game and don't get caught up in it.
