Player Biography

Mike is a native of St. Paul, Minnesota and played last year for the USHL’s Omaha Lancers. Mike is a big baseball fan, and says Corey Koskie of the Minnesota Twins is his favorite non-hockey athlete. He says that he first played hockey on a lake at the age of 5.

Kevin Kasel: Tell me about your family life, do you have any brothers or sisters?

Mike Neilon: I have two sisters. I have a twin sister and a sister that is three years old than me.

Kevin: How old where you when you started playing hockey?

Mike: I started playing hockey when I was probably five or six. I can't remember. My neighbors got me involved. My Dad put me on skates and I started playing hockey when I was five or six years old.

Kevin: Why did you decide to play for the Bucs?

Mike: Actually, I was in a three-player trade. I heard it was a good organization and I wanted to come here. If there were any teams I would have to choose from in the USHL it would be Des Moines, Omaha or Lincoln. So I was happy I was traded here.

Kevin: Have you always been a forward?

Mike: No, actually I played defense till I was in eighth grade.

Kevin: If I won the lottery, the first thing I'd do is ...

Mike: I probably buy my Mom a new house and my girlfriend a new car.

Kevin: Do you have a favorite pro or college team?

Mike: Pro, probably be the (Minnesota) Wild because I am from Minnesota. And college, where ever I am gonna go.

Kevin: What about a favorite player?

Mike: I don't really have a favorite player.

Kevin: Do you have a nickname?

Mike: No, not really?!

Kevin: None you can reveal?

Mike: Yeah, I can't really say.

Kevin: Finish this sentence: The fans would be surprised to know that I ...

Mike: I'm in love with cars.

Kevin: What is your favorite hockey memory?

Mike: Winning the Gold Cup Junior "A" National Championship two years ago.

Kevin: Best decision I ever made?

Mike: To leave my parents when I was young to play in St. Paul.

Kevin: What would you consider your dream car?

Mike: '71 Chevy Camaro.

Kevin: What do you like to do besides hockey?

Mike: I like to read and playing video games.

Kevin: What can't you imagine living without?

Mike: My family. (Side note: I left off his first response.)

Kevin: Finish this sentence. My team mates think I'm ...

Mike: Weird, at sometime, in some certain times in the locker room.

Kevin: Who is your favorite non-hockey athlete?

Mike: Probably Corey Koskie, he is the third basemen for the Minnesota Twins.

Kevin: What is your favorite non-hockey sport?

Mike: That would be baseball.

Kevin: If there is one thing you could change, what would it be?

Mike: Honestly, I would change the drinking age in the United States. No, really I would change the conflicts we are having with the people in the Middle East. If I could settle it, so there is no war, basically.

Kevin: When you're not playing hockey, where are we most likely to find you (in season or off season)?

Mike: Probably in the weight room or in a hockey store, looking around.

Kevin: Do you have a specific pre-game meal? If so, what is it?

Mike: I don't have a specific meal. I just eat healthy. I don't eat cake and stuff like that before a game. Just chicken and pasta, stuff like that.

Kevin: Who is your favorite band?

Mike: I don't have a favorite band. U2, probably my favorite. U2 or Journey, one of those two.

Kevin: What is your favorite TV show/book?

Mike: Favorite TV show is The Real World. Book would be, I don't know, because I love I love so many book. Probably the autobiography of Wayne Gretzky.

Kevin: If you started your own NHL franchise, and you could pick any player, who would you start with and why?

Mike: If I did it in five years, it would be Marty Guerin. Because he is the franchise on the Des Moines Buccaneers. That's what we call him, that's his nickname. So it would be Marty Guerin.

Kevin: Who would you have on your hockey "Dream Team"?

Mike: My forwards, number one would be Marty Guerin, Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux. Defensemen would be Chris Chelios and Chris Pronger. Goalie would be Patrick Roy.

Kevin: If you were stranded on a desert island, whom would you want to be stranded with … Britney Spears, Cameron Diaz, Sarah Michelle Gellar or Tara Reid?

Tracy from behind the bar: I'm not on there?

Mike: I have to choose one of those? Probably, Cameron Diaz.

Kevin: What is something you've always wanted to do, but haven't yet?

Mike: Sky dive.

Kevin: Who would you rather be, Bugs Bunny or Road Runner?

Mike: Bugs Bunny.

Kevin: Who would you rather be, Superman or Batman?

Mike: Superman.

Kevin: Any advice for younger hockey players?

Mike: Just follow your dreams and never give up on 'em. Whatever happens to you, whatever people say, just follow your dreams. Keep working hard.
