Player Biography

Last season, Steve tallied 8 goals and 22 assists for Grand Rapids High School in his hometown of Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Steve’s favorite NHL player is Ray Bourque, because Bourque has logged many years in hockey, and has “hung with it the whole way”. Steve was traded to Tri-City in late December.

Kevin Kasel: Tell me about your family life, do you have any brothers or sisters?

Steve Wagner: I have two brothers. One is 25, the other just turned 21.

Kevin: How old where you when you started playing hockey?

Steve: Five.

Kevin: Why did you start?

Steve: I guess it was the thing to do. Everybody was doing it.

Kevin: Why did you decide to play for the Bucs?

Steve: I got drafted (by the Buccaneers) out of high school. I always wanted to play USHL. I was told that is the league to play in before college. This is where I got picked up at.

Kevin: Have you always been a defensemen?

Steve: Nope, actually I was a forward when I was 14 or 15 I started playing defense.

Kevin: Tell me about the past teams you've played for.

Steve: I played in Grand Rapids (Minnesota) my whole life. I played High School for three years, then coming up I played Pee-wees and Bantams, which are traveling teams. I played quite a bit of summer hockey, just like Minnesota hockey just played other kids around the state.

Kevin: Do you have a favorite pro or college team?

Steve: I would say my favorite college team is the University of Minnesota, the Gophers. I don't really have a favorite NHL team.

Kevin: What about a favorite player?

Steve: I would say Ray Borque.

Kevin: Do you have a nickname?

Steve: Wags.

Kevin: Tell me about some of your goals for the future.

Steve: My goal ever since I was little was to play Division 1 hockey. And where? I don't know, I would like to play in the WCHA, but you never know? It's still up in the air.

Kevin: What are some things you want to do in your life besides hockey?

Steve: I like to get married and have a couple of kids. I would like to become a mechanical engineer.

Kevin: My first job was ...

Steve: My first job was at a car wash.

Kevin: What are your hobbies?

Steve: Hunting or working on cars, go four-wheeling.

Kevin: Do you have a favorite movie?

Steve: Brave Heart.

Kevin: What's your most embarrassing moment?

Steve: Most embarrassing moment, hmmm.... I can't think of one.

Kevin: Who is your favorite non-hockey athlete?

Steve: I got to say Michael Jordan.

Kevin: What is your favorite non-hockey sport?

Steve: Soccer.

Kevin: If there is one thing you could change, what would it be?

Steve: I would probably would have stuck with playing forward.

Kevin: If you were a head coach of a team what would you do?

Steve: What would I do? I would probably stick to basics. Cause when you start getting technical, we get pretty screwed up. Stick with the simple stuff, let the kids do what they can. And work from there.

Kevin: What is your favorite food?

Steve: Eggs.

Kevin: Do you have a specific pre-game meal? If so, what is it?

Steve: Nope. Don't have specific pre-game meal.

Kevin: Who has been the biggest influence on your life?

Steve: My dad has done everything with me. He has been through all the sports. He's been at all my sporting events.

Kevin: What is your favorite move/line from a movie?

Steve: I don't know.

Kevin: If you started your own NHL franchise, and you could pick any player, who would you start with and why?

Steve: I would start with Hatcher, he's a big, strong defensemen. Then I probably have to pick up a couple of fast forwards, I pick up Mike Modano and probably pick Fedorov and Bure, because they are all fast and got good hands and they're all experienced too. I don't know what I would do for a goalie?

Kevin: Who would you have on your hockey "Dream Team"?

Steve: I would have Bobby Orr, the best player ever. I have Gretzky, I probably have Hasek in net. Messier, he has been playing for quite awhile. I don't know who else, there is too many to pick from.

Kevin: If you were stranded on a desert island, whom would you want to be stranded with … Brittany Spears, Cameron Diaz, Sarah Michelle Gellar or Tara Reid?

Steve: I'd pick Cameron Diaz, she's got the funniest laugh of all of them. She's got a good laugh.

Kevin: What is your favorite restaurant?

Steve: Perkins.

Kevin: Who would you rather be, Bugs Bunny or Road Runner?

Steve: Bugs Bunny.

Kevin: Who is your favorite Super-Hero?

Steve: I would have to say Batman.

Kevin: Any advice for younger hockey players?

Steve: Yeah, stick with it. Try and pick up as much skills and knowledge when your young as you can. Don't let people tell you what hockey players should be like, size-wise or mentality-wise. Just make it your own game. You can change things. They don't have to be exactly the same as others.

So if you like it, stick with it. If you don't, maybe you want to find a different sport. Hockey is a challenging game both physically and mentally. Some people can handle it, some people can't.
