Local Star Shoots Bucs Past Steel

Johnston native Chad Costello, who started Thursday night for the Des Moines Buccaneers, led the Bucs to an 8-6 win over the Chicago Steel with two goals in the second period. The goals came just five minutes apart and brought Des Moines back from a 4-3 deficit.

The Bucs started the evening’s scoring, putting two pucks in the net during the fourth minute of the first period. Defenseman Alan Dorich scored the first goal unassisted, and was followed by winger Daniel Watters’ goal less than thirty seconds later. Chicago then scored three straight goals before Pat Borgestad’s goal knotted the game at three early in the second period. The goal was Borgestad’s second of the pre-season.

The game was tied for only three minutes before Chicago scored their third goal of the second period. The Steel lead was also short-lived, as Costello scored his first goal just two minutes later. The Buccaneers scored twice more in the period to take the lead for good, the first time on Costello’s second goal and the second on Samir Saliji’s third goal in as many games, to take a 6-4 lead at the second intermission.

The Bucs stayed hot in the third period, scoring twice more on their way to an insurmountable 8-4 lead. Chicago scored two goals in the final five minutes to bring the game to its final score of 8-6.

Des Moines plays its second game of the Buc Bowl Friday at 7:35 pm against the Sioux Falls Stampede.
