The Des Moines Buccaneers, who haven't been able to climb higher than fifth place in the seven-team USHL, face the awesome task go taking on 20 of the best USHL players in the annual All-Star game here tonight.
The face-off is slated for 7:30 at the Ice Arena.
Ivan Prediger, coach and general manager of the Bucs, said the contest will draw a number of scouts from colleges and professional teams.
"We sent out about 75 notifications and a number of scouts, including one from the Winnipeg Jets (of the National Hockey League), will be here," said Prediger.
Last year's All-Star game here drew about 20 scouts, he added.
Prediger said most USHL players, who are 20 years of age and under, play in the amateur league to land a college scholarship or a tryout with the pros.
After last season, a number of USHL stars received scholarships to Division I colleges.
Prediger said Des Moines defenseman Scott Lauder already has been promised a tryout with several International League teams when the season ends.
Bob Ferguson, the coach at Sioux City, will direct the All-Stars and will be assisted by Dubuque's Jack Barzee.
Prediger said the players were selected by league coaches.
Among those chosen were the Bucs' Myles Hart, who in two weekend games regained the league scoring lead, and teammates Scott Rupp and Bill Ries. But all three will play for Des Moines tonight.
The All-Star activities begin with a banquet at 2 p.m. at the Marriott Hotel.
After an 8-6 loss Friday night to Austin and a 9-5 victory Saturday night over St. Paul, the Bucs stand 12-13-1 on the season.
Prediger said regular prices will prevail for the All-Star game. He added that season ticket-holders may reserve their regular seats by telephoning the Ice Arena office at 278-9757.
