SIOUX CITY, IA - Bill Ries and Rick Swarbrick scored in the first period to get Des Moines off to a good start in the USHL championship series here Wednesday night, but Sioux City poured it on the rest of the way to blast the Buccaneers, 8-2.
The Musketeers skated to a 4-2 advantage in the initial period and blanked the visitors the other two periods to take a 1-0 edge in the best-of-five series.
Mark Pagnac and Frank Cataldo stopped 56 Musketeer shots on goal.
The series will resume at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Des Moines Ice Arena.
The two teams return Saturday night at the Municipal Auditorium here, where Des Moines has failed to win in its last five games during the regular season and playoffs.
