A three-goal burst in the final period enabled Des Moines to tie Sioux City, 4-4, Friday night before a clutch score and two open-net goals in the last 2 minutes foiled the comeback, 7-4.
The victory before about 3,600 noisy fans, the largest crowd of the season at the Des Moines Ice Arena, gave the Musketeers a commanding. 2-0, lead in the United States Hockey League championship series. The third game is tonight at Sioux City.
Fred Kaminska, Sioux City's all-star defenseman and captain inflicted the most damage when his dart from the blue line eluded Des Moines goalie Mark Pagnac to snap the tie with 1:53 to play.
It was Kaminska's third goal, giving him four goals and five assists in six postseason games.
"It's his third year in the league." noted jubilant Musketeer Coach Bob Ferguson. "And experience is strongest asset."
Throughout the contest, Kaminsky & Co. limited Myles Hart, the USHL's regular-season scoring leader, to few shots.
But Bill Ries scored twice and Rick Swarbrick once in the third period to knot the score.
In six playoff games, Ries has goals and five assists to lead the Bucs with 14 points. Hart is next with a dozen.
