Don Geiger, outgoing president of the Des Moines Buccaneers Board of Directors told directors at their annual meeting Monday night that the Bucs and the Greater Des Moines Amateur hockey Association had a combined operating loss of $14,400 in the last year.
Geiger presented a financial statement showing that as of April 9 the United States Hockey League team had a profit of $94,169 but the amateur group had a loss of 108,569.
Geiger said a number of steps are being taken to wipe out the deficit including a huge garage-bake sale this weekend at the ice arena which the two groups share. Jim Johnson, sales manager at radio station KIOA was elected president of the Bucs board to succeed Geiger who was chosen treasurer.
Also elected was Curt Hammer, Vice President; Lucy Clasen, secretary, and Ron Hall and Ron Richer, assistant treasurers.
Coach-general manager Ivan Prediger revealed that Kevin Jordison has resigned as director of sales and public relations. Prediger said Jordison has applied to become general manager at both Stevens Point, Wisconsin and Waterloo.
"Stevens Point wants in (the USHL) but isn't ready," said Prediger, who added that nearby Green Bay, Wisconsin is seeking to rejoin the seven-team league next fall, "but doesn’t have enough spark."
Prediger said that at a league meeting Saturday, plans may be made for the Iowa teams - Des Moines, Dubuque, Sioux City and Waterloo - to play each other more and the northern clubs - Austin, Bloomington, and St. Paul, Minnesota - less.
Prediger said rules changes being considered for next season include eliminating the redline and adding face masks.
The Bucs boss said he already has recruited a number of prospects and they will try out for the team at a fall training camp.
He praised goalie Mark Pagnac, who was in the nets for the only victory by the USHL All-Stars at Leysin, Switzerland, earlier this month and said Pagnac heads eight players who are expected to return in the fall.
The others are Frank Cataldo, Greg Shively, Karl Kringlin, Rick Swarbrick, Daryl Seletenreich, Kevin Tobin and Greg LaDouceur.
