Ben Ryan Makes Verbal Commitment to Notre Dame!
July 7, 2005

The Des Moines Buccaneers announced today that one of their future players for the 2005-06 season, Ben Ryan (2nd round draft pick/17th overall), has made a verbal commitment to play for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish of the CCHA. Ben was certainly one of the best young, skilled players at our Invite Camp, Buccaneers Head Coach/General Manager Regg Simon said. He is very mature for his age though, and I'm not surprised that he made the decision to attend Notre Dame. Ben will play for a top-level hockey program, and he'll get a world-class education. That shows how well he thought the whole process through.

Catching the attention of the Buccaneers coaching staff apparently wasn't the only thing Ryan did during the camp. Also in attendance was the newly hired head coach at Notre Dame, Jeff Jackson. Jackson won two NCAA hockey titles and amassed a career record of 182-52-25 while he was the head coach at Lake Superior State University from 1991-96. After leaving LSSU, he moved on to a successful career with the USA NTDP program and into the ranks of professional hockey. Most recently, Jackson spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach with the NHL's New York Islanders before being hired by Notre Dame in early May. The education, tradition and spirit of Notre Dame is what won me over, Ryan said, who was also considering Michigan and Michigan State. I'm also excited to play for Coach Jackson. He's won everywhere he's coached and has what it takes to get the hockey program turned around. Ryan, a native of Brighton, Michigan, played for the Victory Honda Midget Major AAA program last season, where he compiled 31 goals and 36 assist in 65 games. He will arrive in South Bend to play for Coach Jackson and the Fighting Irish in the fall of 2007.

Two Buccaneers selected by NHL teams
August 2, 2005

The Des Moines Buccaneers are proud to announce that for the eleventh straight year, they've had players selected in the NHL draft. Last Saturday, July 30th, current Buccaneer goalie Brian Foster (Pembroke, NH) and former center Chad Rau (Eden Prairie, MN) were both selected by NHL teams. "Our entire organization is very happy for these two individuals," Buccaneers Head Coach/General Manager Regg Simon said. "Not only are we happy for Chad and Brian, but for the entire USHL as well. There were three USHL players selected in the first round, and this speaks volumes about talent level of our league as a whole." Foster, a University of New Hampshire recruit, was selected in the 5th round (161st overall) by the Florida Panthers. Foster was the Buccaneers first pick and #1 overall draft pick in the USHL Futures Draft in August, 2004. He also played on the USA Select U-17 team that won the gold medal in the 2003 World U-17 Select tournament in Slovakia and was also rated the top goalie at the USA Hockey Select 16 Festival. Last year, Rau led the Bucs in scoring and finished second in the USHL in scoring with 31 goals and 40 assists for 71 points in 57 games. He was named USHL Rookie of the Year and was also an All-USHL First Team member. Along the way, he also helped the USA Hockey U-18 team bring home the gold medal in both the Five Nations tournament and the U-18 World Championships. Team Finland Kicks-Off Season at Buc Bowl
August 10, 2005

This year's Buc Bowl will have an unfamiliar face to it. Not only will the rest of the USHL be participating, a team called IFK Finland will also be competing in the annual event scheduled for September 15 -17th. The Buc Bowl will be the last test for IFK Finland before their Finnish Junior Elite League opener in late September. IFK General Manager Tom Nybondas is thrilled about the opportunity for his team to compete against the USHL squads. "Every season in the past five years we have been one of the highest ranked teams in Finland, but there has seldom been a chance for us to play foreign teams. Now we will really be tested against the top North American squads, and we're looking forward to the challenge. Buc Bowl will be a great start for our season. The whole organization is very excited," says Nybondas, whose team celebrated the Finnish Championship title two years ago. IFK has traditionally been known as the most physical team in the Finnish Elite League. "Our style of playing the game is pretty similar to North American heavy hitting hockey. The "always make contact" attitude is something that, at least in my opinion, lacks in European hockey, so in that sense, we are on a field trip to learn the right kind of toughness. Hopefully this tournament gives us a few bumps and bruises, but also makes us a nastier team to play against when our local league starts" Nybondas adds. Assistant captain and Finnish U18 national team defenseman Timo Seppanen is also happy to get the possibility to show his skills in front of numerous NHL scouts. "We have a lot of talent on this team, and this is an awesome opportunity for the guys who are dreaming about making a living out of hockey. And for the rest of the group, it's going to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Thanks for inviting us. See you in September." IFK's newest rising star, defenseman Teemu Laakso (drafted 78th overall by Nashville this year), will not be playing in Des Moines. He was called up by the IFK elite team and is concentrating on the upcoming season in Finland. "We sure would have loved to have Teemu on the Jr. A squad, but he got a 2-year-contract with IFK and will of course be playing in the SM-league for IFK," says Nybondas. "Teemu is another great example of how the IFK pipeline works. More than 20 players from the pipeline have become professional hockey players during the last five years, among them Tuomo Ruutu (Chicago)", he adds proudly. Otherwise the Buc Bowl roster is complete, ready and prepared to meet the USHL teams. "We have been practicing together off-ice from mid April and on-ice from the first week of August. I am confident that we will be in top form," says Coach Joonas Tanska starting his first year as Head Coach for the Jr. A team.

Bucs Defenseman Chase Ryan plays with the kids at the Easter Seals Child Development Center

Bucs Involved in the Community
November 3, 2005

Bucs Defenseman Chase Ryan plays with the kids at the Easter Seals Child Development Center The Buccaneers have been doing more than just playing hockey.  They have been visiting various elementary schools in conjunction with their annual reading program.  Many dates have been booked through November and into December.  In the past two weeks, some players have volunteered their time at Jordan Creek Elementary, St. Theresa School and the Easter Seals Child Development Center .  Whether it is reading a book to each class or whether it is talking hockey, the kids seem to eat it up.  A few Buccaneer players visited the Easter Seals Child Development Center earlier this week.  Instead of reading a book to the kids, the guys played outside during recess with the kids.  One of the head teachers at the center mentioned that most of these kids do not have a father figure to look up to, so it means the world to them that they (the players) are there playing with them. The first few visits that the Buccaneers have been on this season have been a great success.  Many of the kids look up to the players like celebrities.  Many times the kids will ask for autographs from each of the players that visit.  It puts a big bright spot in the day of a child when a Des Moines Buccaneer volunteers his time, and effort.

Six In A Row
November 5, 2005

The Des Moines Buccaneers were able to pull out a tight 3-2 victory against the visiting Tri-City Storm tonight at 95KGGO Arena.  This victory marks the Buccaneers sixth-straight win and their longest winning streak since the 2000-01 season.  The Tri-City offense, which had scored a league-leading 47 goals through the first 14 games this season, were only able to manage two goals against the brilliant goaltending of Brian Foster in his first start of the season. The stingy Buccaneer defense controlled the first period and no goals were scored.  Rich Purslow got the Bucs on the board with a goal midway through the second period.  Tri-City was able to tie the game with a goal by Greg Battani with less than five minutes left in the period.  Andrew Olson gave the lead back to the Bucs just 32 seconds into the third period.  Aaron Palushaj netted the game winner five minutes later to give the Bucs a 3-1 advantage.  Tri-City tacked on a late goal from Kyle Lawson to cut the lead in half, but the late surge was not enough to get by this tough Buccaneers team. The Buccaneers are in action again on Saturday, November 12th at 95KGGO Arena.  The puck will drop at 7:30pm.  It will be Dale Earnhardt Sr NASCAR Night presented by Budweiser.  Starting at 6pm you can get your photo with the #3 car.

Des Moines Buccaneers Donate Time to Area Elementary Students
November 21, 2005

The Des Moines Buccaneers are doing more than just playing hockey this season. They’re also volunteering their time to Des Moines area school children. Since the season started in September, several Des Moines Buccaneers hockey players have visited over 30 classrooms in the Des Moines Public School system reading to first through fifth grade students. The reading program, known as “Become a Book-aneer,” was founded during the 2004-2005 season as a way for the Buccaneer players to give back to the community that supports them on the ice. “We’ve had a tremendous response to the reading program,” said Mark Phillips, coordinator of the Buccaneers’ ‘Become a Book-aneer’ reading program. “It’s really given the guys a chance to volunteer their time to kids in Des Moines and to have some fun doing it.” Sometimes, the readings are also a chance for the kids to learn more about hockey and ask questions of the Buccaneers themselves. "It's a lot of fun interacting with the kids and seeing the smiles on their faces when we show up,” said Buccaneer defenseman Chase Ryan. "It really seems like they look up to us and it makes me feel good that I can be a positive influence on a young person's life." The Buccaneers will continue the reading program through the end of the season.

Lewis and Palushaj to Play for the University of Michigan
December 29, 2005

Des Moines Buccaneers head coach and general manager Regg Simon today announced that two Des Moines Buccaneers have committed to a Division I hockey program. Forwards Trevor Lewis and Aaron Palushaj have both verbally committed to play for the University of Michigan. Lewis, a native of Murray, Utah, will join the Wolverines for the 2006-07 season. He is currently leading the Buccaneers in goals (19) and points (35). He is also second on the team and in league with a plus/minus rating of +20. This was one of the toughest decisions of my life, said Lewis of his decision to go to choose Michigan. All of the schools that recruited me (Boston College, Maine, Minnesota, Ohio State) have outstanding hockey programs, but my gut feeling was to go to Michigan. Palushaj, a native of Northville, Mich., is also performing well for the Buccaneers. He has recorded 20 points (6 goals, 14 assists) as well as being among the top in the league in plus/minus with a +16. He will play another season for the Buccaneers before joining the Wolverines in 2007. Michigan has the academics and hockey program I was hoping to play for, said Palushaj. The fact that I could be close to my home and family was a big part of the decision. Coach Simon said the two players have worked hard for the honor and will be missed in Des Moines. Both Trevor and Aaron are going to get a world class education and play at one of the most storied college hockey programs in the nation, said Simon. Our entire organization is proud of them.
