In-Depth Interview
October 25, 1996
Sarah: Most kids that come here and play are from out of town. Have you ever had the opportunity to play away from home?
Mark Krueger: No. This is kind of a different experience though, because I played high school hockey here. It's a big step up from the Iowa league to the Junior A league playing against the best players from around the states.
Sarah: Would you have liked to play away from home, or do you prefer playing at here?
M. Krueger: I probably would because it would be another step up. It wouldn't be as hard for me, but I stayed here and I've really enjoyed it.
Sarah: So you enjoy being at home and playing?
Krueger: Yes, it's fun being a home town player and playing in front of all those people you know.
Sarah: Have you always wanted to play for the Bucs, tell me about that?
Krueger: Yes, three of my older brother have played so I'll be the fourth one. It's kind of the thing to do I guess, it seems like it.
Sarah: How old where you when you started?
Krueger: I was about four years old, I think. I'm not sure it was awhile ago.
Sarah: Why did you start?
Krueger: All my brothers played and my dad just started me playing. So I stuck with it. It was fun.
Sarah: What made you decide to play for the Bucs?
Krueger: The first year I tried out I was just out there to see what it was like. This year I made the final cut and it's a good experience.
Sarah: Did you have any other choices?
Krueger: No if I didn't make it here, I was probably going to play high school again for my senior year. I didn't really have any plans of going anywhere else.
Sarah: Have you always been a forward?
Krueger: Yep. I usually played center, but now I play wing.
Sarah: What do you like better?
Krueger: I like wing, I'm used to it now.
Sarah: Tell me about the past teams you've played for.
Krueger: The last three years I've played for my high school team, the Capitols. Last year we got second in state. The year before that I played for my dad and he coached the travel team. The years before that I played under Mike McCall on the travel teams.
Sarah: Do you have a favorite pro or college team?
Krueger: I don't know if I have a favorite college team, but I like the Rangers. They're one of my favorite teams.
Sarah: Do you a favorite player?
Krueger: Probably Messier, I like his style.
Sarah: What do you like to do besides hockey?
Krueger: I played football for a year. I like baseball, but I had to give that up for hockey. For the Summers I had to work on hockey. Now pretty much just the water stuff, water skiing and that kind of stuff, for a good time.
Sarah: What are some of your goals for the future?
Krueger: Come back next year, play for the Bucs again, and hopefully get a scholarship to go wherever to play hockey again.
Sarah: Finish this sentence: The fans would be surprised to know that I...
Krueger: That I'm a hometown player? I don't have anything, I can't think of anything. Sorry.
