In-Depth Interview
December 17, 1996
Sarah: How old where you when you started?
Derek Robertson: I started playing hockey when I was six years old.
Sarah: Why did you start?
D. Robertson: It was just the thing to do growing up in Canada. All my friends played hockey so I was just one of those guys.
Sarah: Why did you decide to play for the Bucs?
Robertson: Coach Owens called me this summer and started talking to me about the upcoming season and he asked where I was going to be playing. I hadn't made a decision and he asked if I wanted to play here "and I said ya, sure, definitely."
Sarah: Have you always been a forward?
Robertson: I've been a center every year I've played.
Sarah: What about past teams?
Robertson: Well I'm from Canada, Thunder Bay, Ontario so I played up in Thunder Bay until I was seventeen years old. I played up there until my midget triple year and the past two seasons I've played Junior A in Manitoba for the Portage Terriers.
Sarah: Do you have a favorite pro or college team?
Robertson: I think my favorite pro team would be the Los Angeles Kings, I've always grown up liking them.
Sarah: Why?
Robertson: My favorite player played for them, Marcel Dionne, that's why I wear number 16.
Sarah: That was my next question, what about a favorite player, but you already answered that. So what are your other hobbies?
Robertson: I like golfing, baseball, working out, watching tv I guess.
Sarah: Can you remember your most embarrassing moment?
Robertson: I scored on my own net, and that wasn't too good.
Sarah: Hmm, that wouldn't be too good.
Robertson: No, it wasn't.
Sarah: What can't you imagine living without?
Robertson: Probably TV.
Sarah: TV?
Robertson: Yeah, never live without it.
Sarah: Finish this sentence: My teammates think I'm...
Robertson: Quiet, I don't say much in the room. They understand that and that's just the way I am.
Sarah: Do you have any college plans?
Robertson: Yes I've committed to the University of Denver next season, so that's where I'll be.
Sarah: What would the fans be surprised to know about you?
Robertson: I guess they'd be surprised to know that I actually did go to school at one time. I haven't been in school for three years and they don't think I ever went. So that's the big joke.
Sarah: Among the other team mates?
Robertson: Yes, among the team mates.
Sarah: Well, that's nice of them.
Robertson: I was in school at one time. |
