In-Depth Interview
February 11, 1997
Sarah: What brought you here and how did that come about?
Christian von Trzcinski: In Germany there's a new rule that they can play a lot of foreigners, so you don't get the chance to get much ice time. So I tried to come here.
Sarah: How did you find out about this opportunity?
C. von Trzcinski: A Canadian friend.
Sarah: Tell me about the last team you played on...
Von Trzcinski: Neuwied team, it's a second league team. I played there at the beginning of the season with six defensemen and then they brought in a foreigner which meant that I sat out.
Sarah: And you told me the Junior teams are not as good in Germany?
Von Trzcinski: No they're not as good in Germany so you have to make the step to the senior team as fast as possible.
Sarah: So before this team, in Germany, where did you play?
Von Trzcinski: I played in Cologne, but I played both junior's and seniors.
Sarah: How does the culture here differ from that of Germany?
Von Trzcinski: The people here eat a lot more fast food. It was also a really big difference for me with the smaller ice rink.
Sarah: Oh, a smaller ice surface?
Von Trzcinski: Yes, in Germany all ice is olympic size. So I had a little bit of problems at the beginning. There are not so much big differences.
Sarah: What do you miss most in Germany?
Von Trzcinski: I would say beer, but I'm not allowed too! No that's a joke. No I think my family.
Sarah: What do like best in America?
Von Trzcinski: My favorite American stuff is Harley Davidson. I like that everything's a lot cheaper than in Germany, especially the clothes and the food.
Sarah: Who or what influenced you to start playing hockey?
Von Trzcinski: I had a friend from my neighborhood who played hockey and he took me with him to a practice. That's the way I started. Near my hometown there's a rink not far away, two miles.
Sarah: So how old where you when you started?
Von Trzcinski: Seven.
Sarah: Do you have a favorite hockey team?
Von Trzcinski: In Germany or here?
Sarah: It doesn't matter, sure in Germany.
Von Trzcinski: The team that I love most is Cologne, because it's near my home town and I played there a long time.
Sarah: Tell me about how the style of play here differs from that of Germany...
Von Trzcinski: It's a lot faster, I think that's because of the smaller ice surface, you don't have as much time to do something with the puck, and it's more physical play.
Sarah: Do you like it?
Von Trzcinski: Yeah I like it.
Sarah: What are some of your other hobbies, what else do you like to do?
Von Trzcinski: In the summer I do a lot of in-line skating, reading, oh that's a joke. Hanging out with my friends. Those are my most hobbies.
Sarah: Do you have any goals for your future?
Von Trzcinski: First I want to try and play a little bit longer here, maybe one or two years longer in the United States, and then try to go back to Germany and play there. In the premier league.
Sarah: Do you want to play junior's here or do you want to play...
Von Trzcinski: Maybe try and play college.
Sarah: What would the fans be surprised to know about you?
Von Trzcinski: I know something, they will be surprised that I don't drink beer. Although in Germany you can drink once your sixteen. |
