Lincoln 4 0 4 0 7 20 0

While the Des Moines Buccaneers enjoyed a week off after sweeping their first round series against the Twin Cities Vulcans, the Lincoln Stars had a slightly more difficult path to their semi-final series.

With less than a minute to go Wednesday night in the deciding game five of their first round series against the Sioux City Musketeers, the Stars found themselves down 2-1 in a hostile environment.

The Stars had the Muskies exactly where they wanted them.

Over the course of the past three years, the Stars have become known for amazing late third period heroics. The trend started at the 1997 national tournament when the Stars scored two goals in the final 20 seconds of a round robin game and then went on to win in overtime. It continued against the Bucs in the playoffs last year, when the Stars scored two goals in the last two minutes before falling in overtime.

Earlier this season, Lincoln scored three goals in less than a minute late in the third period to pull out a 5-4 road win in Waterloo. And then three times in March, the Stars found themselves trailing heading into the third period in the Sioux City Auditorium. Three times, the Stars tied the game with the goaltender pulled in the final minute. And in two of those three cases, Lincoln came out with the win, including Wednesday's 3-2 victory that advanced the Stars to the second round.

For the Des Moines Buccaneers, the road to the semi-finals was a little smoother. The Bucs disposed of the Twin Cities Vulcans in three straight games, although once again, the end of the series came with an overtime goal. In this case, it was Dan Donnette who ended the Vulcans season and completed the sweep, giving the Bucs a 5-4 win in the final game.

During the regular season, the Bucs rewrote the USHL's record book Des Moines' 97 points obliterated the previous record of 84 points, their 48 wins topped the old mark of 42, and their 29 home wins easily surpassed the old mark of 25. In addition, the Bucs' 304 goals were the most posted by any USHL team in the 1990s.

Forward Pete Fregoe was named the USHL's most valuable player, as he won the league's scoring race with 103 points, 26 points than his nearest competitor. Goaltender Matt Carney tied for the league lead in save percentage at 92.1 percent.

If you haven't got the idea yet, the Bucs are good. And when you consider they have a 11-game winning streak against the Stars, it would be easy to say that this could be just a minor speed bump for the Bucs on the way to the Clark Cup.

The picture changes with the addition of a few more facts, however. Lincoln has improved significantly from the start of the season, and finished the regular season with 12 wins in its last 14 games. And the Stars have a lot of momentum after the thrilling end to their series in Sioux City.

Leading the way offensively in the first round for the Stars was Chris Fournier, who posted two goals and two assists in the first round. Former Buccaneer Eric Maksimenko played a pivotal role in the final game, scoring the Stars' first goal of the game and setting up Kyle Anderson's game-tying goal with 38 seconds left in the third period.

Fregoe, who scored 4 goals and added 3 assists in just three games, paced the Bucs in the first round. Peter Sejna scored 3 goals and added two assists, while Michael Chin had one goal and three assists.

The expected goaltending matchup will feature Des Moines' Matt Carney against Lincoln's Wayne Russell. Carney posted a 3.30 goals against average and a 88.5 percent save percentage in the first round, while Russell posted a 1.89 goals against average and an astonishing 93.8 percent save percentage in five games against the Muskies.

Keys to the series

Des Moines:

  1. Find a way to beat Wayne Russell. Russell stood on his head more than once against Sioux City, and a hot goaltender can make a huge difference in the playoffs. It will be a fun matchup between one of the league's top goaltenders and the league's best offense.
  2. Keep up the momentum of the regular season. The Bucs posted one of the best regular seasons in USHL history. If they play the same way in the playoffs, they'll be very tough to beat.

Lincoln:

  1. Play aggressively. The teams that have had the most success against Des Moines this year have used an aggressive style. Meanwhile, the Stars are at their best when they are hitting and forechecking aggressively.
  2. Get at least a split in the first two games. The Stars have lost 11 in a row to Des Moines, so an early win is crucial for building Lincoln's confidence.

Prediction

This series should be much closer than it would have been if it had been played two months ago. The Stars have improved significantly in the past two months, but they're facing the league's best team in Des Moines. Bucs in four.

Green Bay (44-11-4) Vs Omaha (46-13-0)

Omaha 4 0 4 0 8 13 0

Heading into their semi-final series with the Omaha Lancers, the Green Bay Gamblers have reason to feel confident.

After all, the Gamblers swept the season series with the Lancers, winning all four games. Although the two teams tied for second place overall in the regular season, Green Bay will have home ice in this round by virtue of winning the head-to-head series.

However, there are several facts that give the Lancers optimism heading into the semi-finals. Three of Green Bay's wins were by one goal, and the other was by two goals. The Lancers looked very strong in their first round series against Dubuque, easily sweeping the outgunned Fighting Saints. And the Gamblers won't play any games in their home arena despite having home ice advantage.

Once again, the Brown County Arena, where the Gamblers routinely draw large crowds, is not available for playoff action. As a result, the Gamblers have again been exiled to the tiny De Pere Ice Arena. Green Bay has also had trouble getting dates in the Brown County Arena for playoff games in the past, but talks of a new arena continue in Titletown.

Playoff dates haven't been difficult to come by in Aksarben Coliseum, home of the Lancers, but fans have been surprisingly scarce by Omaha standards. The final game of the first round drew just 3,146 fans to the 6,124-seat arena. However, with the promise of a great series between the Lancers and Gamblers, crowds should increase in the second round.

Hometown hero Jed Ortmeyer gives Omahans a good reason to head to Aksarben in the semi-finals. Ortmeyer scored two goals and added three assists in the Lancers' sweep of the Saints. Ortmeyer will attend the University of Michigan on a full scholarship next season. He is the first Nebraska-born player to receive a full scholarship to play division one hockey.

Green Bay's top performer in the first round was Tom Preissing, who scored three goals and added six assists in the three-game sweep of Thunder Bay. Maris Ziedins added two goals and three assists for the Gamblers.

The goaltending matchup will feature Omaha's Tony Zasowski against Green Bay's Rob Anderson. Zasowski led all goaltenders in the first round with a 1.33 goals against average. During the regular season, Zasowski posted a league-best 1.96 goals against average while stopping 91.4 percent of the shots he faced. Anderson was third in the USHL with a 2.30 goals against average and third in the league with a 92.0 percent save percentage.

Keys to the series

Green Bay

  1. Play physical. The Lancers have struggled somewhat with physical teams such as Green Bay and Lincoln. However, the Gamblers have to stay out of the penalty box. The Lancers led the league with a 24.6 percent power play percentage.
  2. Adjust to their temporary home. The Gamblers fought all season for home ice in this series, only to see some of the effects taken away when the Brown County Arena was booked during the semi-finals. The crowd will still be pro-Gamblers, however.

Omaha

  1. Get at least a split in Green Bay. If the Lancers come home down 2-0, they'll be faced with the unenviable task of winning three straight games against a team they won't have beaten in three tries.
  2. Keep up the recent playoff momentum. Omaha's last two USHL playoff series have been sweeps for the Lancers. Omaha always seems to play their best in playoff time, and they will need to in this series if they want to reach the Clark Cup.

Prediction

Green Bay won all four regular season meetings between the two teams, but none were by more than two goals. And the playoffs are a new season. Omaha has the same momentum they had last year at this time, so this might be the place to look for a minor upset. Lancers in five.
