Bucs vs Sioux City Musketeers

Pre Game
Not much to say... The Bucs had lost to Lincoln the night before...and Briere had stumped us on February 21, staying strong in goal and helping his team to a victory.
First
With a wide open net at 11:37 Tom Puorro almost got a goal, but a Musketeer player smacked him roughly to get him out of the way. At 8:53 all the play stopped as they watched Erik Strand attacking Joe Gray. They both got four minutes for roughing. Briere was not doing a bad job, but at 3:04 Puorro got the first goal against his former team (assist to Searles and Robertson). Again at 2:35 Dave Boehm scored (assist to Alex Kim and Matt Libby). With over a minute left we were having an unbelievable period, with a lot of pressure. Saves of the period... Briere, 13... Platt, 6.
Second
It was a quiet period, not much happened. I failed to distinguish the S.C. Player that fell to the ice in pain. He eventually got back up to cheering by the crowd. At least our fans gave him some respect for getting hurt. They weren't playing as well in the second period. They being the Bucs of course. With five minutes left Ryan Rentz took down Adrian Fure, who squirmed on the ice in pain. Rentz was put away for hooking and Fure eventually got back up. There just wasn't as much action in the period but the fans were loud, as usual. Jayme Platt came up big several times and all around was doing a great job. Saves for the period... Briere, 10... Platt, 8.
Third
With 13:20 left Erik Cole was crossing the blue line and coming into the Sioux City zone. The guy that was riding along side of him fell and the ref blew the whistle. Cole was given a penalty for slashing and the fans booed the call. It was a funny period, every time the Musketeer fans would start up a cheer the Des Moines fans would counter it with "Sioux City sucks!" It happened over and over throughout the third period. The Larry chant started with 9:58 to go and soon the Bud Man came sweeping down in cape and hood to dance and cheer. Alex Kim went for elbowing and Randy Enders went for high sticking at 8:58. Antzoulatos with 8:35 left was given a tripping call. None of these penalties amounted to anything. But with 5:36 left Terry Harris was put away for hooking and we were on the power play. At 4:08 Erik Cole scored on a breakaway on the power play (unassisted). Soon we began wondering if Platt would be getting a shutout with the Bucs leading 3-0. The last player to get a goal with 3:03 left was Jake Searles (assist to Tom Puorro). Saves of the period... Briere, 10 = total, 33... Plat, 5 = total 20. Written by Sarah Bendy.

Player of the Game: Tom Puorro; with a goal and an assist to help us defeat Sioux City more than once!
Second Player of the Game: Jayme Platt; just had to give him a player of the game too for getting the shut out!
Special awards go to Terry Harris for helping us by getting that hooking penalty. If it wasn't for him Erik Cole wouldn't have had that breakaway goal!
Bucs at Lincoln Stars

Pre Game
Platt got another start Sunday evening against the Stars... We would be changing our style of play, switching to a more defensive style in readiness for the play offs... I thought the fans were a little disrespectful when they'd yell for the Stars during the national anthem...I had the privilege to sit in Section K, the rowdiest section in the arena, the most notorious, the, well you get my picture!
First
I asked for it sitting in that section! A lone Buc fan in the whole of Section K maybe wasn't a good idea! But hey, I got the tickets from the UPS Man so I wasn't going to complain! At 14:54 there was a penalty called on Dave Boehm. I guess you don't argue with the refs, but Boehmer??? Hmm... Lincoln scored their first goal, 5:43 into the game, on the power play with Josh Langfeld (assist to Chad Mazurak and Derek Reynolds). Know what? I really hate silly string!! From now on whenever I think of Lincoln scoring, I'll think of silly string. At 12:35 Jayme did some of his notorious house cleaning, adjusting his pads for a breather and rest. It must have helped because at 11:29 Sean Austin scored (assist to Alex Kim and Bob Haglund). Some of the Lincoln fans around me were having trouble deciding who was in goal for us. They started yelling "Beam me up, Scotty!" I wouldn't tell them for the world that it wasn't, Scotty. When Kim went for elbowing at 6:54 Lincoln was put on the power play and capitalized with Jay Shaw at 5:07 (assist to Bryan Lundbohm and Ryan Bencurik). And I thought Jayme had saved that one! The Bucs countered with a goal at 3:53 by Bill Trainor (assist to Mike Hanson and Jason Furness). With Bencurik in the box for interference we were having a good power play, but we couldn't quite keep it in the zone. With a mere 43 seconds left a little tizzy in the Buc zone erupted. Nick Fohr had evidently done something because Platt reached out with his stick and slashed at Fohr. Soon the players were pushed up against the boards and emotions were let loose. Tom Puorro and Fohr sat in the penalty box, Puorro for roughing, Fohr for slashing. Shots on goal... Stars, 13... Buccaneers 9.
Second
With 16:48 to go in the second period Bill Trainor scored his second goal (assist to Mike Hanson and Adrian Fure). Then a minute later Lincoln thought they had scored, but a player was in the crease and the goal was waived off. Of course the fans celebrated before they realized what had happened. Silly string got me in the eyes and do you know what? That stuff hurts when it gets in the eyes! It was really great, finally we had the lead over Lincoln! We looked good and the new style of play was working very well. It was almost a trap, but not too much to make it boring. At 9:35 they put Antzoulatos in the box for high sticking. Can I ask how a player can high stick someone when he's falling down onto the ice, might I add that he didn't fall down on his own accord? The two Lincoln goals were power play goals and we were handing them too many power plays, but Jayme was doing a good steady job in net. At 2:44 Cole and Benny were put away... Cole for roughing, Benny for holding. 17:56 into the period Louis Mass was called for holding, a power play opportunity never fails to make me smile! Shots on goal... Stars, 13... Buccaneers, 10.
Third
The start of the third period brought a sloppier play, but we were still on top. Lincoln was becoming more physical trying to tie the game. With five minutes left the Lincoln fans started to get crazy, they were cheering for their team, getting behind them. Platt took this time to adjust his pads again and the fans just got louder. At 4:40 Lincoln scored Jayme arguing to the ref, was he arguing about a player in the crease? Marc Suderman got the goal (assist to Langfeld and someone else's name I couldn't catch, I'm sorry!! The fans were too loud!). Then at 4:17 Lincoln scored again with Ryan Bencurik (assist to Ted Suihkonen and #17, not Shane Spears, I'm not sure who he is!). I couldn't see this goal, there were too many people in my way. With two quick goals Lincoln was ahead of us and we gave up the lead we had held on to for a whole period. Derek Reynolds was called for hooking with 3:38 left and a ten minute misconduct. If the Stars scored again, I would be sick! With 35 seconds left we called a time out. Could we beat Lincoln? Five minutes before it was Lincoln pondering the question whether they could tie the game or not. All of a sudden the tables were turned and we were sitting at the bench pondering game strategies. Don't you just love life? When the play resumed and the puck was iced with five seconds left the game was over. We lost our edge when Lincoln scored the two quick goals. We had dominated the game but when we let down for a few minutes Lincoln took advantage of it! Sorry I didn't get the shots on goal for this last period, they didn't give them to me! Bucs at Green Bay Gamblers
Friday, March 7, 1997
Pre Game
Green Bay goes to the net well and makes quick transitions... We have had no success in our last couple of years up in the Green Bay arena... Green Bay had a record of 35-11-2 and they are the champs of the Northern division... It was the first game of a three game weekend, a long weekend in terms of travel... Saturday night we would be playing North Iowa, and they were currently on an eight game winning streak... North Iowa would be playing Omaha this Friday night... Matt Libby had left early Friday morning before the game to go back home and wouldn't be returning for the rest of the weekend... Clemmensen was in goal... and the biggest news of the night, Happy Birthday to Scott Owens, he turned forty today!
First
Green Bay scored first with Kevin Granato 5:34 into the first period (assist to Willy Todd and Brian Cummings). Soon Green Bay after working hard came up with their second goal, the two goals coming only twenty seconds apart. Heath Gordon got his twelfth of the season unassisted. We had Antzoulatos in the box and Cummings was soon put away also, we had a short power play for 57 seconds. 9:51 to go and we were not able to get much going, we had little offense. We had a whole two whole shots on net for the Bucs and the period was already half over. Clemmensen was doing a good job to stop the onslaught of Green Bay players. The Buccaneers generated a turnover, but Ty Conklin saved it. Clemmensen came up with a big save with 4:20 to go, he was having a strong game with ten saves already in the first period. The Gambler team was making good choices and crisp breakouts to defy us. Jake Searles soon scored on the power play 19:43 into the period (assist to Cole and Haglund). It was Searles thirteenth of the season and third on the power play. Saves of the period... Conklin, 2... Clemmensen, 12.
Second
I tell you, Alex Kim never gets called for penalties (well not often anyway)! He hauled down Kevin Granato in front of the net and didn't get called! Two veterans, Kevin Granato and Chad Stauffacher have long shifts on the ice and they rarely seem to tire. With players like that it's easy to see how they can dominate a game. Matt Golden had quite a chance, but it hit the goal post (thank goodness!). Clemmensen was out of position and as Golden tried later in the period for a rebound he hit the post again. 7:53 of the second period Erik Cole scored on a wrist shot, the game was tied at two (assist to Adrian Fure and Mike Hanson). It was Cole's second point on the night. Green Bay answered with a lot of pressure and Clem came up and challenged them. Soon though they became conservative and stopped risking as many shots on the net. It didn't help when they dumped Cole and were called for it. Garrett Stafford, Kim, and Dave Boehm were all having a good power play, but Conklin stood his ground. It had been a fairly clean game up until this point, and now it seemed as though the Gambler club was getting frustrated. When Craig Pierce took Bill Trainor down the Bucs were on another power play. Sean Austin scored at the 14:52 mark and it only took him three seconds to get the power play goal (assist to Alex Kim and Garrett Stafford). Yes, if in doubt shoot the puck! Soon Chris Antzoulatos and Craig Pierce tied up and it seemed as though Antonio was holding himself back. They needed to be separated. The Bucs got a power play out of all that and there was 2:51 to go. The Bucs were on their fifth power play and Austin scored again on the power play with a hard shot (assist to Boehm and Derek Robertson). With 2.2 seconds left Heath Gordon scored on a turn over, it was his second of the night (assist to Jason Cupp and Chad Stauffacher). Saves of the period...Conklin, 9...Clemmensen 15.
Third
After the late goal in the second period Green Bay caught on fire and Clemmensen battled many pucks but stopped them all. But 1:42 into the period Erik Cole scored on a long range shot. Conklin had been having trouble with those shots and Cole capitalized on it. Justin Marcum had two chances to score against Clemmensen, but he was flattened by Austin before he could get the third rebound. Soon, though, Clem gave way and Matt Golden scored as it trickled in under him. The game was 5-4 and the crowd was wild. Ty Conklin had yet to make a save five minutes into the third period, and Clem already had five. Now was a time to play disciplined hockey to keep a hold of the lead, however... Green Bay scored on a deflection with Chad Stauffacher and their team and the crowd was fired up. Pete Fregoe had a short handed breakaway, but as Golden took Fregoe down he was given a penalty shot. As Fregoe skated in and shot a wrist shot his way, Conklin saved it. I was starting to get tired and groggy, we lost the lead and it now looked as though we were going into over time. Cole had a breakaway and when he went to the backhand it was saved by Conklin. Kevin Granato came down with a breakaway, but fell down to the ice. With 52 seconds left the crowd was into the game, it was a very exciting game.
OT
We had a little bit of everything in this game, everything that is except a fight... it was all very fun, just not as fun for the loser. Haglund had a wraparound try but Conklin saved. Man, Bob's a regular Wayne Gretzky. The time was running down and we were going into a shoot out.
Shoot Out
We've only won one shoot out, Bill Trainor is the only one that can score in the shoot outs. The players had practiced this before they got on the bus Thursday. The winning team got to eat oranges, the losing team got to eat lemons.
Jake Searles shot first, going to the forehand it was saved by Conklin. Kevin Granato took the first shot for Green Bay, after getting a high five from Conklin he took off, the backhand was saved by Clem. Bill Trainor shot next, Conklin saved it. Jason Cupp was second for G.B. And Clem saved it. Derek Robertson shot third, going to the forehand he scored on the five hole. Chad Stauffacher, the captain, was the third shooter, Clem saved the forehand. Sean Austin was next, and he hit the post. Heath Gordon shot with a backhander, and Clem saved it. Now this is really ridiculous, the ref waived it off twice and then changed his mind!!! Erik Cole then came in with two breakaway's already spoiled on the night. He was booed by the crowd. His backhander was saved. Ryan Forbes was next with the chance to win it all for the Gamblers, Clem saved. It was now a sudden death shoot out. The first person to score wins the game. Tommy Puorro was picked first, Conklin saved it. Green Bay's Matt Golden went straight down the middle and it went off the cross bar! Garrett Stafford was next and we had a chance to win, it was saved. The seventh shooter was Jim Kotajarvi, if he got the goal it was over, Clemmensen saved it. Dave Boehm was next and Conklin saved it. I tell you this was a night for the goalies. Justin Marcum came in, he played for the Billings Bulls last year, with a backhander he scored and the game was over. Green Bay won with the extra point. Written by Sarah Bendy.

Pre Game
Matt Libby's mom died early this morning... North Iowa (before Omaha last night), had a hot winning streak... The fans would be voting for their favorite player tonight and only tonight... My prediction for the fan's most popular player is that Erik Cole will win it... Jayme Platt was in goal.
First
At 19:13 Bob Haglund was taken down for hooking. When Bill Trainor had a breakaway at 18:25 he was taken down by Eric Lawson. Lawson was given a two minute slashing penalty. At 12:48 Haglund was hurting, but he stayed on the ice. He always stays on the ice, even when he's hurting! With five minutes left in the first period Erik Cole passed to Trainor for a one-timer, but it was missed. At 2:38 Keith Anderson was called for hooking. Then with 1:45 Darren Henry (N.I's goalie) saved something that should have gone in! It had been an excellent power play and with 1:24 left another penalty was called on Lawson for slashing (isn't that his second slashing penalty in one period?). For over 40 seconds we would have a 5 on 3. Henry was doing a good job with 56 seconds left in the period and 18 seconds for the 5 on 3. Saves for the period... Henry, 7... Platt, 10.
Second
With 18:51 left in the period Alex Kim went for cross checking and all the play was in the Buc zone. Platt made a great glove save during this power play. When Jon Cullen took down Erik Cole at 11:55 and drew blood with his high sticking he was ejected from the game. We were on a five minute power play. Cole scored at 10:45 of this power play taking advantage of the high stick against him (assist to Adrian Fure and Jake Searles). Then with 4:31 left Cole scored his second of the night (assist to Bill Trainor and Sean Austin). He brought the puck in all the way and scored, it would prove to be the last of the scoring for the Bucs. At 2:28 a mop went by behind me and I wondered if somebody had thrown up behind me in the stands. I couldn't stomach the thought... With 1:21 left Cole almost got his hat trick but it was pulled back by Henry. Saves of the period... Henry, 8... Platt, 11.
Third
At 14:12 of the third period the net was open and a Huskie had a chance to score, but Platt came up and saved it twice. Christian Laden was called for interference 7:43 into the period. North Iowa scored at 11:51 and suddenly noise erupted from section 1, Peter Cullen had gotten the goal (assist to Keith Anderson and Paul Murphy). I realized that a quiet section was full of N.I fans. It was the only thing they had to scream about. With 2:10 left players were in the net and Hags went for cross checking. For the rest of the game we would be short a man. North Iowa took a time out and discussed their game plan. They talked about pulling their goalie I'm sure. If they pulled Henry they would have two extra attackers on the ice. With one minute left Henry was pulled. Cole almost got his hat trick into the empty net, but as he was skating he left it behind him. Saves of the period... Henry, 8 = total, 23... Platt, 14 = total, 35. Written by Sarah Bendy.

Pre Game
Jayme Platt had won another start, while Clemmensen sat on the bench, leaning against the padded post... It would be Dubuque's last home game of the regular season... It would be the last time many of the fans would see Mikhail Saliyenko, Jay Varady, and Dan Stepanek... Know what, I have decided that the goal judge at Dubuque has a lonely job! The one behind Platt had to stand in between bleachers that were stacked up. He only had that little space to stand, not sit.
First
With 9:13 left to go Sean Austin stopped a breakaway by tripping the guy up. He ended up taking a penalty, but it was needed. With 8 seconds left on the Austin penalty Alex Todd was called for hooking. Then at 6:42 Jayme Platt stopped another breakaway, one that shouldn't have happened. We certainly couldn't win this game playing the way we were... much less hope for anything better in the play offs! Thank goodness for Platt, he was the only strong thing going for us. It was soon a relief to know that there was only a minute left in the period. I was too tired for an analysis, to depressed to care. As the final seconds ticked down a momentary relief set in. Shots on goal... Des Moines, 7... Dubuque, 12.
Second
At 16:03 of the second period Alex Kim scored (assist to Garrett Stafford and Dave Boehm). At 15:14 Matt Doman and Chris Antzoulatos fought... Oh, Antzoulatos won the fight, hands down! And was it only my imagination that I saw him blow the smoke off his fist as he got off the ice? Skating off to "hit me with your best shot!" I wonder?... When Des Moines took a time out near the ten minute mark Coach Owens didn't have much to say to his team. Meanwhile Coach Mikesch made the most of the few seconds. Sometimes the most important things you say, are what you don't say at all. At 7:53 when the Saints attacked Jayme the shot went right through and into the back of the net. Tom Rouleau scored (assist to Dan Stepanek and Mikhail Saliyenko). At 7:02 Jake Searles was called for a hooking. Then with 1:35 left on the Searles penalty Alex Todd was also called for hooking when he took Bob Haglund down. We would have 23 seconds of power play. With 1:14 left in the period Christian von Trzcinski and Jay Varady started fighting, for no apparent reason. Both were ejected for fighting with five minute majors. Take note, this was Trzcinski's first fight ever (well, at least on the ice!). He didn't do a bad job either! Shots on goal, total of two periods... Des Moines, 17.. Dubuque, 21.
Third
Platt was still strong in goal, we needed that, since we weren't getting much of anything else. Haglund walked in at 16:20 and put a shot on net, it almost went in. With 11:20 left I was beginning to wonder if we'd be lucky enough to get out with a win. At 9:48 Josh Kern went for tripping and we were on the power play. Dave Boehm had a good shot on Josh Blackburn, it didn't go in. Some forty seconds after Kern was put in the box Kim scored his second goal of the night (assist to Dave Boehm). Erik Cole had a break at 4:54, with Mike Hanson streaking behind him, but Blackburn stopped it. With 1:23 left Blackburn was pulled and we came close to losing our one goal lead. When Cole had another break with ten seconds left and shot it, it went off the cross bar!!! Shots on goal, total of three periods... Des Moines, 28... Dubuque, 31. Written by Sarah Bendy.

Pre Game
Quick facts... It was house parent appreciation night... Sean Austin, Bob Haglund, Mike Hanson, and Christian von Trzcinski were all out for unspecified violation of team rules... Jason Furness was helping out on defense... Clemmensen in goal.
First
Ted Belisle took a nose dive as he came skating out for the first period. Erik Cole scored only nineteen seconds into the period (assist to Adrian Fure). It seemed like it would be a different game compared to last weekend! Christian Laden went for tripping 2:37 into the period. About a minute later the Flyers scored with Jesse Heerema (assist to Chris Heino). When Mark Kreuger scored his first goal of the season it became a feeding frenzy, it came at 12:56 (assist to Chris Antzoulatos). He scored on an unbelievable play! It was about two minutes later that Erik Cole scored his second goal (assist to Bill Trainor). Robertson was given a ten minute misconduct with 2:42 left, I have no idea why. When Derrick McIver took Erik Strand down it was one of the first times I'd ever seen Strand something other than happy. He got checked, then dumped and it wasn't called. At 1:26 Steve Bailot charged Antzoulatos and this time this penalty got called. Antzoulatos just smiled at Bailot as the penalty was called by the ref. With 4.3 seconds left another skirmish broke out and Alex Kim and Jamie Minor were put away for roughing.
Second
At 18:31 of the second period Aaron Piccinin got checked and went down to the ice. He didn't get back up without help. Later we were told he had separated his shoulder. With 14:13 left Pete Fregoe scored (assist to Trainor). This goal was all started by Trainor who brought the puck in - Trainor was on fire during the second period - he was all over the ice, making things happen. Then at 12:03 Jason Furness scored off a great play (assist to Erik Cole and Bill Trainor). The play was just as fierce as the period before and miles away from last weekend. Pete Fregoe scored his second at 8:25 (assist to Erik Cole). Pete scored again 14:49 into the period and got himself a hat trick (assist to Erik Cole). It must have been his first hat trick in the building, because he kept the puck. With 41.4 seconds left in the period Thunder Bay scored with Kevin French (assist to Derrick McIver and Jesse Heerema). I couldn't see the goal at all, since I had people in my way. Then with 1.9 seconds left Derek Robertson scored, and I thought the period was over when Kevin French scored! But at the end of the period (no time remaining on the clock) Tom Puorro and Steve Bailot both started fighting. They were both ejected, I'm not sure that Puorro won that one...
Third
At 13:49 Yvon Hopps started pushing away the Thunder Bay players who had been attacking Clemmensen. Hopps and Heerema both got four minute roughing double minors. We had lost some intensity in the third period, but we were ahead 8-2, I didn't see any problem. Cole finally got his hat trick at 7:56 when he skated the length of the ice and scored on a partial break (unassisted). I wasn't sure it went in when, but the red light went on. At 6:42 Thunder Bay skated into the zone and when Chris Heino put a slap shot on net he scored (assist to Jesse Heerema and Damien Liddle). At 4:35 Cole left the ice with a hurt knee and didn't return for the remaining minutes. Alex Kim scored with 2:51 left (assist to Erik Strand). Thunder Bay didn't even bother to pull the goalie! Shots on goal for all three periods... Thunder Bay, 30... Des Moines, 37. Written by Sarah Bendy.

First
Mark Krueger and a Dubuque player slammed full force into each other and fell down to the ground around the 14:04 mark. Don't ya' just love those bone jarring hits? Nothing came of that hit, but maybe a few dizzy heads. Christian von Trzcinski scored the first goal from the point at 13:03 (assist to Jake Searles and Tom Puorro). We weren't attacking with as much pressure, not like the night before! At 9:17 Dubuque's Josh Kern scored (assist to Jed Holtzman and Ken Marsch). The crowd wasn't even into the game! Derek Robertson scored the second goal with 3:43 left (assist to Tom Puorro and Adrian Fure). We ended the period with a penalty to Hopps for interference. Saves of the period... Stodgell, 5... Platt, 12.
Second
At 18:13 Holtzman went for holding. Nothing came of the power play. Before the 15:45 mark when Alex Kim tried to glove the puck down he ended up throwing his glove in the air. A funny sight! 8:36 into the period Alex Kim and Josh Kern both went for roughing coincidentals. Less then ten seconds later and Holtzman was called for another penalty, this time it was interference. At 3:50 Sean Austin was called for interference. This penalty allowed Dan Stepanek to score Dubuque their second goal (assist to Tom Rouleau and Alex Todd). About 13 seconds after this Dubuque scored another quick goal from Kern (assist to Kris Harris). The crowd which had been quiet thus for, now started grumbling. With one minute left I looked forward to the relief of the second intermission. Saves of the period... Stodgell, 8... Platt, 8.
Third
The third period picked up where it left off and Dubuque scored with Holtzman, sixteen seconds into it (assist to Phil Lewandowski and Kris Harris). We had a power play chance at 18:17 when Jan Varady got called for holding. However, Jason Furness picked that time to do a little pushing and shoving! He also got put away, but for roughing. Our power play was nullified. Garrett Stafford and Phil Lewandowski were both given unsportsman-like penalties for jawing at each other. Even at this point we had a lot of noise from the crowd, but it was a disgruntled crowd. Alex Todd was called for hooking at 12:35. This power play was wasted on sloppy play. At 8:57 Alex Kim scored (assist to Bob Haglund and Adrian Fure). Before 6:19 the goalie was way out and the net was wide open, but the puck hit the post! With 52 seconds left Platt was pulled. Then with 37.2 seconds left Des Moines called a time out. But as the seconds ticked down on the clock the crowd just got quieter. Was it the disappointment of a loss? The team's play was unacceptable, that's all there is to it. The crowds effort wasn't up to par either. Let me tell you, if we continue to play like this through the play offs we won't make it beyond the first round! Saves for the period... Stodgell, 13 = total, 26... Platt, 6 = total, 26.
